Lyric Opera Studio Weimar proudly presents Così fan tutte, Mozart’s comic masterpiece with serious undertones about love, fidelity, and deception.
When two handsome soldiers claim that their fiancées will be forever faithful, an old philosopher joins the discussion and bets the two officers that he can prove in a day’s time that these two women are fickle, just like all women. The wager is accepted and the two soldiers pretend to be called off to war; soon thereafter they will return in disguise and attempt to seduce each other’s lovely wife-to-be.
Così fan tutte’s cleverly constructed plot, light-hearted at first, gets complicated when hearts are torn and emotions conflicted. Will love and trust be restored so there is a “happy” ending with the original couples? Or will we be left to wonder: is there any such thing as “true love”? Filled with beautiful music, Così fan tutte (“Thus do they all”) was bracingly politically incorrect even for Mozart’s day. A period staging by LOSW’s General Director Damon Nestor Ploumis deftly blends elegance and farce to emphasize the very real human emotions embedded throughout Mozart’s miraculous score.
